What FMB membership actually means

The Federation of Master Builders badge appears on a lot of building company websites, and it is worth knowing what actually sits behind it rather than treating it as decoration.

What FMB membership requires

The FMB vets applicants before granting membership, including checks on trading history, financial standing and quality of work, and members agree to a code of conduct. It is not simply a paid directory listing; there is an actual bar to clear.

The MasterBond warranty

FMB members can offer MasterBond, an insurance-backed warranty that protects a customer's deposit and gives cover if the builder cannot complete the work, which is a concrete protection beyond a verbal assurance.

Access to dispute resolution

If a disagreement arises over the standard of work, FMB provides a formal dispute resolution service, giving a route to resolution that does not exist when you hire outside any trade body.

How to verify it yourself

The Federation of Master Builders website has a member search where you can check a company's membership status directly, rather than relying on a logo displayed on their own site. Worth doing before committing to any building company, not just this one.

What to ask

Whoever you are talking to, it is a fair question to ask directly whether they or their company hold FMB membership, and to check it yourself on the FMB website rather than taking a logo at face value.
